Improving the communication with the horse: Five Tips

I frequently suggest to folks there needs to be a beginning, middle and end to the conversation. By presenting pieces of the "whole" conversation, the rider or handler can have an improved "real time" interaction with the horse.

In order to help the human become more clear in their thoughts, communication and skill set, I suggest asking themselves the five questions posed below. The person's answers will help clarify what, where and when things might need to be refined between horse and human conversations.

So, the next time you are either leading or riding your horse notice these five things:
  1. Do you make a clear choice in where and how fast you wanted to move with your horse?
  2. Did you "check in" with your horse and notice/address any initial distraction or concern he may be having before you presented what you desired?
  3. How did you communicate specifically what you wanted from the horse as far as direction and energy in his movement?
  4. What was his response to your aids?
  5. Did you "tell" your horse with your aids where the end point was of your desired destination or leave it up to him to sort it out?
