Desensitizing the Horse vs Supporting the Horse

I don't try to desensitize or de-spook a horse. Instead the more the horse is mentally available and engaged in a Conversation with the human, the less overwhelming the world can be.

The more the horse can learn to think through scenarios, the less reactive and dramatic his behavior will be.

It isn't about mindlessly repeating a task to "get the horse used to something."

Instead it is about the person prioritizing and addressing the horse's mental and emotional state. Helping him drain defensiveness allows him to become interested in what is being presented.

The more curious, the less fearful.

The less fearful, the more reasonable in his physical movement and behaviors.

So by the time you swing the potentially concerning rope, the horse's thoughts and emotions have been addressed allowing them not to involve themselves in the chaos, but still be present as to what is happening.

  1. I love how you recognize that horses don't need to be scared into submission. It is definitely all about relationships. This is something
emphasized where my daughter currently trains and I really love them at crescendofarm.com. Thanks for posting this article. I have seen many people try to teach horses with fear instead. xoxo
