After much preparation in first offering her time, then building trust with this BLM mustang yearling filly with her learning to accept being touched, haltered, and led. Then she was finally ready for her first outing and some time in a different pasture.

Horse Training: Illusions & Misperceptions

 The Illusion of "Horse Training"

One of the greatest negative contributors in the horse industry (to both the human and horse) is the misperception of "Horse Training."

Horse Herd Dynamics- Equine Behavior

 Herd Dynamics

There is a continuous rotation of horses here on the farm as equines arrive from all parts of the country staying various lengths of time depending on their individual needs in their re-education and often rehabilitation.

Horsemanship: Humans Learning to be Present

What if...

We applied this first to Ourselves?

*Mentally

*Emotionally

and then

 *Physically

when we are with the horse?

So many riders use the horse as time for the human to escape from reality or as an outlet from life's stresses.

Rarely do they recognize and address the Supportive Communication the horse needs from Us for them to stay mentally present, emotionally quiet, and physically reasonable.

The "Equine Partnership" will not be successful or retain quality if its foundation is based solely on the horse serving the human.

The Illusion of Horse Training- Human Misperceptions

The Illusion of "Horse Training"

One of the greatest negative contributors in the horse industry (to both the human and horse) is the misperception of Horse Training.

Horsemanship and Equine Partnership

This post comes as a result of several recent comments I’ve heard from horse people as they are getting “amped up” for the upcoming spring riding season. Especially in areas of the country that are affected by nasty, cold winter weather, it seems that winter brings on a lethargic feeling, and so instead of the actual hands-on time with their horses, people tend to try to learn via technology, books, etc.

Horsemanship: Misinterpretation of horse behavior and communication

Frequently I've had posts shared with me about how "cute" something is in a horse, mule, or donkey's behavior. Unfortunately, when folks filter their interpretation of an animal's behavior with human emotions, it clouds their judgment in learning, recognizing, or believing what the animal was experiencing and communicate.

How to create Adaptable and Reasonable horses

How do YOU and YOUR horse respond if:

You go into the pasture/stall with a halter in your hand, but don't immediately catch your horse.

You open the gate/stall door but don't go out it.

When you do go out the gate, you stop and talk to someone, instead of continuing on to wherever the tack up area is.

You tack up "wrong"- place your saddle blanket on the horse's neck or rump instead of the "normal" area, or change the order by bridling before you saddle.

You lead from the horse's right side.

Behind the Scenes with the Horse Trainer

When I get a call from an owner about a potential horse to participate in training, a lot runs through my mind during the conversation.

The trouble with horse training programs

I meet a lot of folks with dangerous horses who experienced a specific "training program."

What is Alternative Horsemanship?

I was recently asked about the "Alternative Horsemanship" and why I use that to describe what I do. So I thought I'd share with the group my answer...
The interpretation of "Alternative" Horsemanship is relative to your current perception and word association... as the human student's awareness and recognition of believing the horse's communication evolve, so does their translation of what Alternative "is."
